Band Pres Cenedlaethol leuenctld Cymru

The National Youth Brass Band of Wales in the University of Bangor July 2006 / Band Pres Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru ym Mhrifysgol Bangor ym mis Gorffennaf 2006

The NATIONAL YOUTH BRASS BAND OF WALES, under its first musical director, and current president, Edward Gregson, was founded by the Welsh Amateur Music Federation 1982.  In addition to Edward Gregson, conductors have included Arthur Kenny, Bram Tovey, Howard Snell, James Gourlay, Frank Renton, James Watson, Nicholas Childs and Ray Farr.  The current Music Director is Robert Childs.

From its first concert at the Brangwyn Hall, Swansea, the Band established an enviable reputation for performing contemporary music, including many first performances and commissions.  These include Alun Hoddinott’s 8th Symphony, and works by Mervyn Burtch, Christopher Painter, John Phillips, John Pickard, Peter Graham, Nigel Clarke and Martin Ellerby.  The Band’s commissions have added considerably to the brass band concerto repertoire, and include those by Mervyn Burtch (piano), Philip Wilby (euphonium), Gareth Wood (trombone, harp, horn), and Alun Hoddinott (percussion) in addition to Alun Hoddinott’s Concerto Grosso for Brass and Four soloists.

A large number of former members are now well known as soloists, or as performers with top British bands or orchestras.  The majority of NYBBW tutors once played in the National Youth Brass Band of Wales, as did nearly all the Band’s pastoral staff – poachers turned gamekeepers indeed.

Tours to The Netherlands and Norway, performances at the major Welsh Festivals, and radio and television broadcasts have been features of the Band’s activities to date: 2004 saw its first performance at the Welsh Proms, and the formation of the 'Friends of the NYBBW'. A tour of Canada is planned for 2007, in celebration of the Band’s 25th anniversary.

Sefydlwyd BAND PRES CENEDLAETHOL IEUENCTID CYMRU, o dan ei arweinydd cyntaf a’i lywydd presennol, Edward Gregson, ym 1982 gan Ffederasiwn Cerddoriaeth Amatur Cymru.  Mae’r rhestr o arweinyddion eraill ers Edward Gregson yn cynnwys Arthur Kenny, Bram Tovey, Howard Snell, James Gourlay, Frank Renton, James Watson, Nicholas Childs a Ray Farr.  Robert Childs yw’r Cyfarwyddwr Cerdd presennol.

Ers ei gyngerdd cyntaf yn Neuadd y Brangwyn, Abertawe, mae’r Band wedi ennill clod heb ei ail am berfformio cerddoriaeth gyfoes, gan gynnwys nifer o berfformiadau cyntaf a chomisiynau.  Ymhlith y rhain mae 8fed Symffoni Alun Hoddinott a gweithiau gan Mervyn Burtch, Christopher Painter, John Phillips, John Pickard, Peter Graham, Nigel Clarke a Martin Ellerby.

Ychwanegodd comisiynau’r Band yn sylweddol at y repertoire concerti i fandiau pres, ac yn eu plith mae gweithiau Mervyn Burtch (piano), Philip Wiliby (ewffoniwm), Gareth Wood (trombôn, telyn, corn), ac Alun Hoddinott (offerynnau taro) yn ogystal â’r Concerto Grosso i Fand Pres a Phedwar unawdydd gan Alun Hoddinott.

Mae nifer fawr o gyn-aelodau’r Band bellach yn adnabyddus fel unawdwyr, neu berfformwyr gyda phrif fandiau neu gerddorfeydd Prydain.  Bu’r rhan fwyaf o diwtoriaid BPCIC yn chwarae yn y band ar un adeg, fel y gwnaeth bron pob un o’i staff bugeiliol – do, trodd yr herwhelwyr yn giperiaid!

Hyd yma, bu teithiau cyngerdd i’r Iseldiroedd a Norwy, perfformiadau ym mhrif wyliau Cymru, a darllediadau radio a theledu yn nodweddu gweithgareddau’r Band.  Perfformiodd y Band am y tro cyntaf yn Proms Cymru yn 2004, ac yn yr un flwyddyn ffurfiwyd 'Cyfeillion Band Pres Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru'. Trefnwyd taith i Ganada yn 2007, i ddathlu pen-blwydd y Band yn 25ain oed.
