NATIONAL YOUTH JAZZ WALES is one of a range of new initiatives created under the auspices of National Youth Arts Wales.  Administered by the Welsh Amateur Music Federation, NYJW seeks to provide opportunities for young musicians to work with top jazz specialists, learn new skills, and bring these skills to the concert platform.

After a successful inaugural course under the direction of John Quirk in Swansea in July 2001, National Youth Jazz Wales members were resident in North Wales in Easter 2002, also sharing the platform with the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales in Cardiff in June 2002.

Courses and concerts in 2003 were held in Swansea, with guest MD David Firman, and in Colwyn Bay in 2004, under the direction of its new Music Director, Jeremy Price.

In 2005 the ensemble held its Easter course at Gwersyll yr Urdd, part of the Wales Millennium Centre and gave a number of performances in the Centre’s Glanfa Foyer, again directed by Jeremy Price.

For these courses the young players formed two ensembles – a 'big-band' and a smaller, more improvisatory group, thus extending the learning and performance experience both of players and audience.

An exploratory improvisation course was held in February 2006, with an autumn course directed by Stan Salzmann, who again directs the ensemble in February, 2007.
