National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales
Cerddorfa Chwyth Genedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru

National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales April 2006 / Cerddorfa Chwyth Genedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru Ebrill 2006

The NATIONAL YOUTH WIND ORCHESTRA OF WALES is the newest of the 'Nationals' and was formed by the Welsh Amateur Music Federation in 2002 under the musical direction of Frank Renton.  John Greaves conducted the Orchestra in 2006 and in 2007 we welcome Nigel Boddice as conductor.

The provision and growth of instrumental music tuition in schools throughout Wales is one of the success stories of British education, and one that we should not take for granted.

Despite the vicissitudes of recent years, Welsh peripatetic music education, school and county ensembles, and local community groups, continue to produce fine wind, brass and percussion players.

However, unlike the 80 or so bands that represent the strong brass tradition, there are few community-based wind orchestras in Wales.

Fortunately, the genre is developing steadily and successfully at school and county music level, and the provision of a national youth ensemble will, it is hoped, give focus and encouragement to this development, and a further opportunity for young players to work with musicians of national and international standing.

(Spare a thought, though, for the brass players, some of whom are members not only of the Wind Orchestra, but of the Jazz Ensemble, Brass Band and Symphony Orchestra!)

The Orchestra’s repertoire explores a wide range of musical styles, and includes both music written specifically for the genre and transcriptions.  The Orchestra has also commissioned new music, including Gareth Wood’s Legends of the Bear.

CERDDORFA CHWYTH GENEDLAETHOL IEUENCTID CYMRU yw’r ensemble 'Cenedlaethol' mwyaf diweddar ac fe’i ffurfiwyd gan Ffederasiwn Cerddoriaeth Amatur Cymru yn 2002 dan gyfarwyddyd cerddorol Frank Renton.  Arweiniwyd y Gerddorfa yn 2006 gan John Greaves ac yn 2007, croesawir Nigel Boddice yn arweinydd.

Mae’r ddarpariaeth a thwf hyfforddiant offerynnol mewn ysgolion ledled Cymru yn un o lwyddiannau’r byd addysg ym Mhrydain, ac yn un na ddylem ei chymryd yn ganiataol.  Er gwaethaf holl gyfnewidiadau’r blynyddoedd diwethaf, mae addysg gerdd gan athrawon teithiol yng Nghymru, ensemblau ysgol a sirol, a grwpiau mewn cymunedau lleol, yn parhau i gynhyrchu chwaraewyr chwyth, pres a tharo o safon.

Fodd bynnag, yn wahanol i’r 80 neu fwy o fandiau sy’n cynrychioli’r traddodiad pres cadarn, prin yw nifer y cerddorfeydd chwyth cymunedol yng Nghymru.  Yn ffodus, mae’r genre yn datblygu’n raddol ac yn llwyddiannus mewn ysgolion ac ar lefel cerddoriaeth sirol hefyd, a’r gobaith yw y bydd y ddarpariaeth hon o ensemble cenedlaethol i ieuenctid yn rhoi ffocws a hwb i’r datblygiad hwn, ynghyd â chyfle pellach i berfformwyr ifanc weithio gyda cherddorion sydd wedi ennill bri yn genedlaethol a rhyngwladol.  (Ystyriwch, serch hynny, fod rhai o’r chwaraewyr pres hyn nid yn unig yn aelodau o’r Gerddorfa Chwyth, ond yr ensemble Jazz, y Band Pres a’r Gerddorfa Symffonig hefyd!)

Mae repertoire y Gerddorfa yn archwilio amrywiaeth eang o arddulliau, ac yn cynnwys cerddoriaeth sydd wedi ei chyfansoddi’n benodol ar gyfer y genre yn ogystal â thrawsgrifiadau.  Comisiynwyd cerddoriaeth newydd gan y Gerddorfa hefyd, gyda Legends of the Bear gan Gareth Wood ymhlith y gweithiau hyn.
