Support for Youth Music

Tŷ Cerdd-Music Centre Wales places great emphasis on the importance of music as a means of developing cultural and social awareness, essential transferable skills, and, not least, enjoyment.  The holistic benefits of music-making are particularly relevant as far as young people are concerned, and it scarcely needs pointing out that the future of a music tradition in Wales – both amateur and professional – depends on the encouragement and support that is given to young musicians.

The Welsh Amateur Music Federation formed the National Youth Brass Band of Wales in 1982, and the National Youth Choir of Wales in 1984.

More recently, and working in partnership with the Welsh Joint Education Committee to deliver National Youth Arts Wales, the Federation formed National Youth Jazz Wales in 2001, the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Wales in 2002, and National Youth Symphonic Brass in 2004.

Membership of each ensemble is by annual audition – the only exception being National Youth Symphonic Brass Wales, whose members are drawn from the National Youth Brass Band, Orchestra and Wind Orchestra of Wales.

Music directors and tutors are drawn from specialists of national and international standing.

Each ensemble regularly commissions new music through the Welsh Amateur Music Federation with funding also provided from the Arts Council of Wales and the PRS Foundation.

The continued success of 'the nationals' depends on sustained support for music-making at national, county and school level, as well as within the local community.

The high standards and achievements of those who 'perform for Wales' in the National Youth ensembles – equal at least to those in the field of sport - should be a source of great pride.

Cefnogi Cerddoriaeth Ieuenctid

Mae Tŷ Cerdd-Music Centre Wales yn rhoi cryn sylw i bwysigrwydd cerddoriaeth fel cyfrwng i ddatblygu ymwybyddiaeth ddiwylliannol a chymdeithasol, sgiliau trosglwyddadwy hanfodol ac, uwchlaw popeth, boddhad.  Mae manteision cyfannol cerddora yn arbennig o berthnasol yn achos pobl ifanc, ac o’r braidd bod angen tynnu sylw at y ffaith fod dyfodol traddodiad cerddorol yng Nghymru - ar lefel amatur a phroffesiynol - yn dibynnu ar yr anogaeth a’r gefnogaeth a roddir i gerddorion ifanc.

Ffurfiwyd Band Pres Cenedlaethol Cymru gan Ffederasiwn Cerddoriaeth Amatur Cymru ym 1982 ac yna, ym 1984, sefydlwyd Côr Ieuenctid Cenedlaethol Cymru ganddo.  Yn fwy diweddar, a thrwy weithio mewn partneriaeth gyda Chyd-bwyllgor Addysg Cymru er mwyn gweinyddu Celfyddydau Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru, aeth y Ffederasiwn ati i ffurfio Jazz Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru yn 2001, Cerddorfa Chwyth Genedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru yn 2002 a grŵp Pres Symffonig Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru yn 2004.  (CBAC sy’n gyfrifol am weinyddu Cerddorfa Ieuenctid Genedlaethol Cymru, Dawns a Theatr Cymru – gweler y dolenni cyswllt.)

Bydd aelodau pob un o’r ensemblau hyn yn cael eu dewis yn dilyn clyweliad blynyddol – yr unig eithriad yw band Pres Symffonig Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru, sydd â’i aelodau hefyd yn aelodau o Fand Pres, Cerddorfa a Cherddorfa Chwyth Genedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru.  Caiff y cyfarwyddwyr cerdd a’r tiwtoriaid eu penodi o blith arbenigwyr sydd wedi ennill bri yn genedlaethol ac yn rhyngwladol.  Bydd pob ensemble yn comisiynu’n rheolaidd gerddoriaeth newydd drwy Ffederasiwn Cerddoriaeth Amatur Cymru, a darperir nawdd ariannol hefyd gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru a Sefydliad PRS.

Mae parhad llwyddiant yr ensemblau 'cenedlaethol' yn dibynnu ar gefnogaeth gyson i gerddora ar lefelau cenedlaethol, sirol ac ysgol, yn ogystal ag oddi mewn i’r gymuned leol.  Dylai safonau a chyraeddiadau uchel y rhai hynny sy’n 'perfformio dros Gymru' yn yr ensemblau Cenedlaethol i Ieuenctid – sydd o leiaf gydradd â’r rhai ym myd chwaraeon – fod yn destun cryn falchder i bob un ohonom.
