The first workshop took place nearly the end of summer break, exactly when I needed some motivation for the approaching academic year. Meeting other composers with diverse interests and experiences was very refreshing. The workshop itself also revealed possibilities to incorporate different types of gestural devices into composition; I was fully motivated and ready to experiment with these technologies straight away.
The idea of 'sonification of data' guided me throughout this very first step of composing for gestural devices. I started to think about actual gestures, the data they can generate, and the transformation of such data into sounds or sound processing. Basic concepts of the piece began to form, but I believe that at this stage my priority should be building devices on MaxMSP to experiment in the next workshop and realise the piece later in the programme. I mostly explored a 'Gametrak' (or 'Tether' in Swanlork's term) and started working on a patch that uses certain gestures to control different bandpass filters and also volumes of speakers. It has been very inspiring so far and I am very excited about the upcoming workshop!
