Only 24 days until CROSSROADS International Contemporary Music Festival 2018 at the Universität Mozarteum Salzburg, where this year I am the only UK-based composer to be showcased and have the opportunity write for leading Scottish chamber ensemble, Hebrides Ensemble.
For this new piece I thought I would work in our shared - or certainly similar - ancient musical history with a play on reels and imagined/misremembered folk-tunes. Shifting the focus between clear gesture with 'sung' or realised melodies and the haze of time passing. This is the music of the Celtic colonisers, several generations later, marooned on a lonely and distant planet; the ancient forms of their national music almost completely lost in translation, with only the smallest vestiges of the 'national' style remaining.
