CALL: Gustav Mahler Composition Prize 15.03.24

Invitation to submit to the 22nd International Gustav Mahler Composition Prize of the City of Klagenfurt. Composers of any nationality and without age limit are invited to submit compositions (Duration: max. 10 minutes) for vocal quartet (soprano, alto, tenor, baritone).

We’re happy to announce that the internationally renowned vocal ensemble “Cantando Admont” will act as the competition’s ensemble and will premiere the

awarded works on 12th of July 2024 at the Musikforum-Viktring-Klagenfurt. In addition, the works will be recorded and broadcasted by the Austrian national radio station Ö1.

The Gustav Mahler Composition Prize was founded in 1995 and - in the spirit of the Musikforum - is characterized by openness to all musical directions. Submitting composers are encouraged to experiment and re-think stylistic boundaries. The integration of improvised elements is also possible.

The Jury’s decision is final and will be made at the beginning of May 2024.

The compositions are to be submitted in electronic form (PDF of the full score), sent as an e-mail attachment to along with the signed application form and composer’s biography. Please note, that NO indication to the identity of the composer may appear on the scores’ PDF file. The cover page of the score must indicate the title of the composition.

To make the jury’s work easier, you may additionally submit a MIDI recording of the composition. This is considered extremely helpful, but not a requirement.

PDF/MP3 files will be forwarded to the jury anonymized.

Please note that incomplete submissions cannot be considered.

The composers of the awarded pieces commit to be present at the premiere of their work (travel and accommodation expenses up to EUR 250 will be reimbursed by the Musikforum Viktring-Klagenfurt).

The submitted pieces may not be publicly performed or published before the premiere in Klagenfurt on July 12th, 2024.

The composer provides the sheet music to Musikforum Viktring-Klagenfurt on time and free of charge. Each participant can submit only one composition.
