John Senter 1953

Ganwyd John Senter yn Norfolk ac aeth i’r Royal Academy of Music yn Llundain, gan astudio’r soddgrwth gyda Derek Simpson a chyfansoddi gyda Richard Stoker. Roedd yn un o sylfaenwyr yr Arditti Quartet, sydd wedi ymroi’n llwyr i berfformio cerddoriaeth glasurol gyfoes. Ymunodd â Cherddorfa Symffoni’r BBC ym 1975 ar adeg pan oedd Pierre Boulez, y prif arweinydd ar y pryd, yn cyflwyno repertoire cyfoes heriol. Ym 1977 cymerodd swydd Prif Soddgrwth Cerddorfa Genedlaethol Gymreig y BBC, a dyna lle y bu tan 2013, pan yr ymddeolodd o chwarae’n llawn amser. Gyda mwy o amser rhydd mae wedi dychwelyd i gyfansoddi ac wedi ysgrifennu sawl darn i gerddorfa, a rhai caneuon, yn ogystal â seithawd seiliedig ar y disgrifiad o seithawd ffuglennol Vinteuil yn “The Captive” Marcel Proust.

John Senter was born in Norfolk and attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, studying the cello with Derek Simpson and composition with Richard Stoker.  He was a founder member of the Arditti String Quartet, which has always been devoted solely to performances of modern music.  He joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1975 at a time when Pierre Boulez, then principal conductor, was introducing challenging contemporary repertoire.  In 1977 John took the position of Principal Cello of BBC NOW, where he remained until 2013, when he retired from full-time playing.  With more free time he has returned to composing, having written several pieces for orchestra and some songs, as well as a septet based on the description of the fictional Vinteuil’s septet in Marcel Proust’s The Captive.
