Gan arbenigo mewn estheteg, offeryniaeth a chynhyrchu sain, astudiodd James gerddoriaeth ym Mhrifysgol Bryste gan ennill gradd anrhydedd yn y dosbarth cyntaf a gradd feistr mewn cyfansoddi ar gyfer ffilm/teledu. Yn ystod y cyfnod yma, perfformiwyd nifer o’i ddarnau siambr, corawl a cherddorfaol gan gynnwys ei waith symffonig cyntaf, Eleutherios. Ar ôl graddio, treuliodd ddwy flynedd yn Nenmarc yn datblygu ei sgiliau cynhyrchu cerddoriaeth bop gan weithio gydag Alphabeat, Lazyboy a Junior Senior. Dychwelodd i’r DU i weithio fel cynhyrchydd / peiriannydd llawrydd cyn mynd yn ei flaen i sefydlu stiwdio recordio Tŷ Cerdd yn 2004.

 

Gan weithio ar draws amrywiaeth o genres, mae James wedi cynhyrchu, peiriannu, trefnu a chymysgu i artistiaid blaenllaw gan gynnwys John Paul Jones, Rufus Wainwright, Bryn Terfel, Judith Weir, Cerys Matthews, Jem ac Iwan Rheon ar ran labeli mawr megis Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, Sony, EMI, Onyx, Chandos a Naxos.  Mae wedi gwneud llwyth o recordiadau cerddorfaol gan gynnwys CDs gan Gerddorfa Genedlaethol Frenhinol yr Alban, Cerddorfa Ffilharmonig Frenhinol Lerpwl a Cherddorfa Siambr Lloegr ac yn ddiweddar dychwelodd o’r dwyrain pell ar ôl recordio Cylch y Fodrwy gan Wagner gyda Cherddorfa Ffilharmonig Hong Kong.

 

Mae James yn cyfansoddi mewn amryw o idiomau gan gynnwys y clasurol, trawsrannu, ffilm, pop a gemau ac wedi ysgrifennu i neu gyda Jem, Amy Wadge, Tim Rhys Evans, Only Men Aloud, Theatr Hijinx, Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru,  Llywodraeth Cymru, Oculus a Sega. Mae’n offerynnwr taro, pianydd, gitarydd ac yn ganwr ac yn aml bydd yn perfformio ar y recordiau y mae’n eu cynhyrchu.

Specialising in aesthetics, orchestration and audio production, James studied music at Bristol University achieving a first-class honours degree and a masters in film/TV composition.  During this time a number of his chamber, choral and orchestral pieces were performed, including his first symphonic work, Eleutherios. Following graduation he spent two years in Denmark developing his pop music production skills whilst and worked with Alphabeat, Lazyboy and Junior Senior. He returned to the UK to work as a freelance producer/ engineer before going on to establish Tŷ Cerdd’s recording studio in 2004.

 

Working across a range of genres, James has produced, engineered, arranged and mixed for leading artists including John Paul Jones, Rufus Wainwright, Bryn Terfel, Judith Weir, Cerys Matthews, Jem and Iwan Rheon on behalf of major labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, Decca, Sony, EMI, Onyx, Chandos and Naxos. He has made a great number of orchestral recordings including CDs by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and English Chamber Orchestra and recently returned from the far east having recorded the Hong Kong Philharmonic’s  Wagner's Ring Cycle.

 

James composes in various idioms including classical, cross-over, film, pop and gaming and has written for or with Jem, Amy Wadge, Tim Rhys Evans, Only Men Aloud, Hijinx Theatre, Welsh National Opera, Welsh Government, Oculus and Sega. He is a percussionist, pianist, guitarist and singer and often performs on the records he produces.
