Quartet

The work presented attempts simply to hone an honest idea – a motif with character in rhythm, harmony and form. The origins of the idea are attached to a sequence that can descend through keys unendingly. This gave me enough initial scope to start with, but developing such a pattern further meant making its direction less transparent. The distinct monophonic voices of each acoustic instrument would, in my mind at least, work together sustainably when woven into an active polyphony, especially considering some absence of bass. While proving a bit of a challenge, working with an uncommon ensemble type has also proved a relevant experience for forming groups with the purposes of playing new music. And after a fairly solitary past two years, getting reacquainted positively with open-minded musicians was my main objective. 

Yn y bôn, mae’r gwaith a gyflwynir yn ceisio mireinio syniad gonest – motiff gyda chymeriad o ran rhythm, harmoni a ffurf. Mae gwreiddiau’r syniad yn gysylltiedig â dilyniant sy’n gallu disgyn yn ddiddiwedd drwy gyweiriau. Bu hyn yn rhoi digon o le i mi ar y cychwyn ond bu datblygu patrwm o’r fath ymhellach yn golygu gwneud i’w gyfeiriad fod yn llai tryloyw. Byddai lleisiau monoffonig arbennig pob offeryn acwstig, i’m tyb i o leia, yn cydweithio’n gynhaliol wrth gael eu cydblethu’n bolyffoni byw yn enwedig wrth ystyried absenoldeb ychydig o’r bas. Er yn dipyn o her, mae cydweithio â math anghyffredin o ensemble hefyd wedi bod yn brofiad perthnasol at ffurfio grwpiau at ddibenion chwarae cerddoriaeth newydd. Ac ar ôl bod ar fy mhen fy hun braidd dros y ddwy flynedd diwethaf, cael ailgyfarfod yn gadarnhaol â cherddorion sydd â meddwl agored oedd fy mhrif amcan.
