William Mathias - Tŷ Cerdd Records latest release

Press release – 31 July 2017

Tŷ Cerdd Records releases historic recording of
William Mathias as composer-performer

Mathias cover SMALL

The latest release from Tŷ Cerdd Record is dedicated to the music of prominent 20th-century Welsh composer William Mathias.

The composer’s own performance as soloist in the 1968 premiere of his Third Piano Concerto
(with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Moshe Atzmon) is framed by recent concert performances: Piano Concerto No. 2 by Llŷr William (with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under Grant Llewellyn), and Mathias’s setting of the harrowing Dylan Thomas war poem Ceremony after a Fire Raid (BBC National Chorus of Wales, Adrian Partington).

Rhiannon Mathias, the composer’s daughter, is an academic and lectures at Bangor University School of Music, where Mathias was Professor and Head of Department. She knows well the place this repertoire had in her father’s heart: ‘He thought of the piano as being very much his own instrument and performed as soloist in all three of his piano concertos, premiering Concertos No. 1 and No. 3. I am so delighted that Tŷ Cerdd are releasing this inspirational new disc, and hope that the listener will enjoy the exceptional quality of the music, as well as hearing – for the first time on disc – my father’s extraordinary skills as a concert pianist!’

The launch event will take place at the National Eisteddfod in Bodedern, Anglesey, at the Bangor University stand – on Sunday 6 August at 1pm. Special guests Rhiannon Mathias and Llŷr Williams welcome and toast this new release.
