Detholiad Medal y Cyfansoddwr 2026

Yn dilyn galwad agored boblogaidd a chystadleuol iawn, mae Andrew Cusworth, Claire Victoria Roberts a Gwenno Morgan wedi cael eu dewis ar gyfer Medal y Cyfansoddwr. Bydd y tri chyfansoddwr a ddewisir yn ysgrifennu dau ddarn corawl byr, un ar gyfer SATB ac un ar gyfer côr ieuenctid/plant (SA), y ddau yn gosod testun gan Waldo Williams ac yn gweithio gyda'r mentor cyfansoddwr Nathan James Dearden, y cyfarwyddwr corawl Caleb Mock a chôr SATB a ddygwyd ynghyd yn arbennig ar gyfer y llwybr hwn.


Mae Medal y Cyfansoddwr yn wobr gyfansoddi cerddoriaeth flaenllaw fawreddog a ddyfernir yn flynyddol yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru. Eleni, bydd y cyfansoddiadau a ysgrifennwyd gan y cyfansoddwyr dan sylw yn cael eu perfformio yn Seremoni Medal y Cyfansoddwr, a gynhelir ar brif lwyfan y Pafiliwn yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Garreg Las. Fel un o brif ddigwyddiadau'r Eisteddfod, cynhelir y seremoni ddydd Sadwrn 8 Awst, lle bydd yr enillydd yn cael ei gyhoeddi a'i ddathlu.

 

Cyflwynir y llwybr hwn gan Tŷ Cerdd mewn partneriaeth â'r Eisteddfod Genedlaethol a Chymdeithas Cerddoriaeth Cymru.

Medal y Cyfansoddwr 2026 Selection

Following a very popular and competitive open call, Andrew Cusworth, Claire Victoria Roberts and Gwenno Morgan have been selected for Medal y Cyfansoddwr ('The Composer's Medal'). The three selected composers will write two short choral pieces, one for SATB and one for youth/children’s choir (SA), both setting text by Waldo Williams and work with composer mentor Nathan James Dearden, choral director Caleb Mock and an SATB choir brought together specially for this pathway.

Medal y Cyfansoddwr is a prestigious flagship music composition prize awarded annually at the National Eisteddfod of Wales. This year the compositions written by the composers involved will be performed at the Composer’s Medal Ceremony, held on the main Pavilion stage at the Garreg Las National Eisteddfod. As one of the Eisteddfod's foremost events, the ceremony will take place on Saturday 8 August, during which the overall winner will be announced and celebrated.

This pathway is delivered by Tŷ Cerdd in partnership with the National Eisteddfod and Welsh Music Guild.

​Mae Andrew Cusworth yn gyfansoddwr sy’n fwyaf adnabyddus am ei gerddoriaeth gorawl atmosfferig sydd, yn ogystal â chael ei pherfformio ledled y byd, wedi derbyn cydnabyddiaeth mewn sawl cystadleuaeth ryngwladol. Mae wedi cyfansoddi ar gyfer ensemblau ac unawdwyr ar bob lefel, gan ymfalchïo mewn helpu i wireddu dyheadau cerddorol amaturiaid a gweithwyr proffesiynol fel ei gilydd. Perfformiwyd ei gerddoriaeth mewn pob math o leoliadau, yn amrywio o ysgolion cynradd i'r Ganolfan Kennedy. 

Dechreuodd Andrew ysgrifennu cerddoriaeth yn 14 oed wrth dyfu i fyny yn Sir Benfro. Astudiodd gerddoriaeth yng Nghaergrawnt lle bu’n ysgolhaig organ yng Ngholeg Magdalen. Ar ôl cyfnod o weithio fel organydd ac arweinydd côr, dychwelodd i Gaergrawnt i astudio MMus mewn Astudiaethau Corawl. Derbyniodd ei PhD o’r Brifysgol Agored mewn partneriaeth â Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru am ymchwil ddigidol i hanes diwylliannol cerddoriaeth draddodiadol Gymreig ac mae bellach yn gweithio ym Mhrifysgol Rhydychen. 

Andrew Cusworth is a composer best known for his atmospheric choral music which, as well as being performed around the world, has received recognition in international competitions. He has written for ensembles and soloists of all levels, taking pride in helping to realise the musical aspirations of amateurs and professionals alike. His music has been performed in settings ranging from primary schools to the Kennedy Center.  

Andrew began writing music at 14 while growing up in Pembrokeshire. He read music at Cambridge where he was an organ scholar at Magdalene College. After a period of working as an organist and choral director, he returned to Cambridge to read an MMus in Choral Studies. He received his PhD from the Open University in partnership with the National Library of Wales for digital research into the cultural history of Welsh traditional music and now works at the University of Oxford.

Mae Claire Victoria Roberts yn gyfansoddwr, cantores a feiolinydd, sydd rhwng y ffiniau jazz, cerddoriaeth clasurol, a cherddoriaeth gwerin. Fel perfformiwr a chyfansoddwr bu’n rhan o’r Take Five Artist Serious Music / EFG London Jazz fest, a pherfformiodd ei cherddoriaeth ei hun yn Glasgow Jazz, Jazz Manceinion a’r EFG Showcase yn y Royal Albert Hall. 

Perfformiwyd ei gwaith hefyd gan Gerddorfa Genedlaethol Gymreig y BBC, Psappha Ensemble, y sielydd Oliver Coates, Opra Cymru, Uproar Ensemble, Solem Quartet, Côr Cenedlaethol Ieuenctid Cymru, Ensemble Gwerin Ieuenctid Cymru a The Carice Singers. Mae hi wedi cydweithio fel feiolinydd a chantores gyda Camden Symphony, Theatr y Sherman, côr New Voices, Gŵyl Gelfyddydau Morley, Gŵyl Celfyddydau Aberystwyth. Fel cyfansoddwr, mae hi wedi cael ei chomisiynu gan Ŵyl Cheltenham, Gŵyl Llanandras, MusicFest, a Neuadd Wigmore. 

Enillodd Claire wobr Cyfansoddwr Ifanc Urdd Cerddoriaeth Cymru yn 2022, a gwobr cyfansoddwr Jerwood Arts yn 2021. Yn ogystal, hi yw enillydd Gwobr Gyfansoddi’r Gymdeithas Ffilharmonig Frenhinol 2019-2020, a’r 2017 gwobr Cyfansoddi Mathias. Mae hi wedi cael ei darlledu ar Radio 3, Radio Wales a Radio Cymru. 

Claire Victoria Roberts is a composer, vocalist and violinist, blurring the boundaries of jazz, classical and folk genres. As a performer and composer she was a part of Serious Music / EFG London Jazz fest's Take Five Artist development scheme, and performed her own music at Glasgow Jazz, Manchester Jazz and the EFG Showcase at the Royal Albert Hall. 

Her work has also been performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Psappha Ensemble, cellist Oliver Coates, Opra Cymru, Uproar Ensemble, Solem Quartet, The National Youth Choir, The National Youth folk ensemble and The Carice Singers. She has collaborated as a violinist and improvising vocalist with Camden Symphony Orchestra, Sherman Theatre, New Voices choir, Morley Arts Festival, Aberystwyth Arts Festival. As a composer, she has been commissioned by Cheltenham Festival, Presteigne Festival, MusicFest, and the Wigmore Hall. 

Claire won the Welsh Music Guild's Young Composer award in 2022, was awarded a Jerwood Arts composer award in 2021, is the Winner of a Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize 2019-2020, as well as 2017 winner of the Mathias Composition prize, and 2019 winner of a Francis Chagrin award. She has been broadcast on Radio 3, Radio Wales and Radio Cymru.

Gwenno Morgan

Mae Gwenno Morgan yn gyfansoddwr a phianydd sy’n adnabyddus am ei sain sinematig a neo-clasurol. Yn 2024, rhyddhaodd ei halbwm cyntaf, Gwyw, sy’n cyfuno dylanwadau clasurol, gwerin a jazz i greu ‘collage sinematig’. Cafodd yr albwm ei ganmol gan CLASH ac mae ei gwaith yn cael ei chwarae'n barhaus ar BBC Radio 3 Unwind. 

Mae gwaith cyfansoddi Gwenno yn ymestyn ar draws ei gwaith fel artist, yn ogystal â sgorio i ffilm a theledu. Ymhlith ei chredydau sgrin ydy’r ffilm fer Waiting for Burton a gafodd ei darlledu ar BBC 2 Wales y llynedd, yn ogystal â Hen Wragedd a Ffyn (S4C) a gafodd ei enwebu yn y Celtic Media Festival 2023.  

Mae hefyd wedi gweithio fel Cyfarwyddwr Cerdd Cynorthwyol ar Branwen: Dadeni gyda Chwmni Frân Wen mewn cydweithrediad â Chanolfan Mileniwm Cymru. Fel perfformiwr medrus, dewiswyd Gwenno ar gyfer rownd derfynol Gwobr Ysgoloriaeth Bryn Terfel 2023, ac mae wedi chwarae gyda Cherddorfa Genedlaethol Gymreig y BBC. 

Astudiodd biano clasurol ym Mhrifysgol Leeds a phiano jazz ym Mhrifysgol Gogledd Texas, cyn mynd i wneud cwrs Meistr ym Mhrisfysgol Goldsmiths, Llundain. 

Gwenno Morgan is a composer and pianist known for her cinematic and neo-classical sound. In 2024, she released her debut album Gwyw, which blends classical, folk, and jazz influences to create a 'cinematic collage.' The album was praised by CLASH, and her music is regularly featured on BBC Radio 3 Unwind.

 

Gwenno’s work spans her practice as an artist as well as composing for film. Her screen credits include the short film Waiting for Burton, broadcast on BBC Two Wales last year, as well as Hen Wragedd a Ffyn (S4C), which was nominated at the Celtic Media Festival 2023. 

She has also worked as Assistant Musical Director on Branwen: Dadeni with Cwmni Frân Wen in collaboration with Wales Millennium Centre. As an accomplished performer, Gwenno was selected as a finalist for the 2023 Bryn Terfel Scholarship Award and has performed with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

She studied classical piano at the University of Leeds and jazz piano at the University of North Texas, before going on to do a Masters course at Goldsmiths University, London.
