Palladio was a breakthrough work for Jenkins when it was used in a TV advertising campaign for De Beers diamonds in 1993. A baroque pastiche, the opening Allegretto evokes the taut, driving string textures of Italian composers such as Vivaldi and Albinoni.

Ever-present in the Classic FM Hall of Fame, The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace is Karl Jenkins’s most performed work. It is dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo conflict which was taking place during the period of its composition. The Armed Man is built around the traditional Catholic Mass and includes settings of the Kyrie, Sanctus, Agnus Dei and Benedictus, however the work is distinctive as its text and influences are drawn from a range of religions and cultures.

Jenkins wrote his Euphonium Concerto for David Childs who premiered it at the Welsh Proms in 2009. Its energetic, playful and lyrical music makes the most of the instrument’s huge technical potential.

Adiemus – Songs of Sanctuary was originally composed for a Delta Air Lines TV commercial. Written in an invented language, the full-length choral work combines classical and world music influences which have ensured its enduring popularity.

Stravaganza is Jenkins’s new concerto for saxophone and orchestra which will be performed at the BBC Proms in August. Read our Stravaganza article
