Michael Triggs 2002

Michael Triggs is a composer of concert and media music who has written award-winning works for orchestra, brass band and fixed stereo medium. His music has been performed and workshopped by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, the Cory Band and the National Youth Brass Band of Wales.

Born, educated and based in Cardiff, Michael graduated from the University of Birmingham with a first class honours degree in music, specialising in composition under the tutorship of Ryan Latimer, Michael Zev Gordon, Annie Mahtani and Scott Wilson. During his studies, Michael was awarded the COMPASS Prize for Electroacoustic Composition in Association with Birmingham Electro-Acoustic Sound Theatre (BEAST), won the University of Birmingham Composition Competition and had his music premiered by the University of Birmingham Orchestra and Brass Band.

Recent notable performances and projects include Pyrodances, selected for Composition: Wales by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales; Postcards, commissioned by Cathays Brass and supported by Tŷ Cerdd and Arts Council of Wales; and Steel Tracks, composed for the Cory Band as part of the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama Cory Band Composition Prize, which was later performed on tour by the National Youth Brass Band of Wales.

Alongside composing for concert commissions and collaborative media projects, Michael works as a Concerts & Projects Assistant with Sinfonia Cymru and teaches as a brass tutor with Cardiff & Vale Music Education. Throughout his portfolio career and creative output, Michael is passionate about accessibility in music, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to access high-quality music experiences and engage with music making.
