A call is open to recruit six artists to CoDi Opera – a development pathway for composers.

Guiding the six selected artists through the process will be: composer Robert Fokkens and writer/dramaturg Sophie Rashbrook, supported by soprano/composer Sarah Dacey.

Through a series of workshops, composers will be given the tools to work confidently with text and narrative – moving from scenario, through libretto to writing for voice.

PATHWAY OUTLINE

Session 1: SCENARIO AND LIBRETTO

A session on scenarios: looking at how they are devised and constructed, and considering the relationship between the scenario, the libretto, and the score.

Session 2: SCENARIO TO LIBRETTO

Exploring approaches to libretto writing and the use of text more broadly in music theatre.

Session 3: LIBRETTO AND MUSIC

A practical, hands-on session, firstly looking at the libretti the participants have created; then working with soprano Sarah Dacey on the musical material they have created so far.

Session 4: MUSIC AND STAGING

Putting the music together and exploring how the piece might be staged.

REHEARSAL & PERFORMANCE

DURING COVID-19

Owing to the uncertainty brought by Covid-19, Tŷ Cerdd and the participating composers will be required to take a flexible, innovative approach to process and delivery. Initial workshops and engagement is likely to take place digitally, with the hope that in due course the activity can be located in Tŷ Cerdd’s studio at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff,.

SUBMISSION AND COMMISSION DETAILS

  • Selected participants will receive a fee of £500 each (to include expenses and all costs)

  • Open to Welsh and Wales-based composers. (A Wales-based composer is defined, for the purposes of this scheme, as an artist who has been living in Wales for a minimum of 12 months.)

  • Selected artists will create a work of up to 10 minutes’ duration.

  • Submission by application form (see bottom of this page), plus CV and 2 examples of work by SoundCloud link (NB: no more than 2 links; do not attach sound files).

  • Submissions from the broadest range of artists are encouraged – we want to ensure that this opportunity is accessible to all. We welcome applications through alternative methods (eg video applications).
