CoDI Sound

NEW LEAF

Niamh O'Donnell

A minnau’n ansicr pa fath o gerddoriaeth roeddwn i ei eisiau ar gyfer y prosiect hwn, es ati yn gyntaf i arbrofi, gan ymchwilio i’r rhyngweithio cymhleth rhwng yr electroneg a’r nodiant. Ar ôl mynd ar drywydd hyn am sbel heb fawr ddim yn dod ohono, penderfynais fynd yn ôl ac edrych eto ar y darn hwn, yn symlach y tro hwn, a dechreuais gydag un llinell alaw sionc ar y piano, sydd i’w chlywed ar y dechrau. Cefais fy ysbrydoli gan yr alaw, ac o ganlyniad mae tonyddiaeth y darn yn amlwg yn y modd Doraidd. Hefyd, o feddwl eto, yn lle deuawd rhwng yr electroneg a’r nodiant, penderfynais fy mod eisiau i’r electroneg gynorthwyo’r deunydd, pwysleisio’r gerddoriaeth a berfformiwyd eisoes, yn hytrach nag ychwanegu mwy at y sain sydd eisoes yn lluoseiniol, a gwneir hyn trwy ategion electronig fel Decay, Reverb ac EQ.

Yn olaf, ar ôl gorffen ysgrifennu’r darn hwn, roeddwn i angen teitl a oedd yn driw i’r broses gyfan hon. Penderfynais alw’r darn yn New Leaf, gan fod yr arddull hon o gerddoriaeth fel chwa o awyr iach i mi ac fe’i hysgrifennwyd ar drothwy degawd newydd.

Unsure of what kind of music I wanted for this project, I originally set out experimenting, researching complicated interactions between the electronics and notation. After pursuing this for a while without many results, I decided to go back and look at this piece with a simpler approach in mind and began with a singular, spirited melody line on the piano, which can be heard at the beginning. I was inspired by the melody, and consequently the piece’s tonality resides prominently in the Dorian mode. Also, on reflection, I decided that instead of a duet between the electronics and notation, I wanted the electronics to assist the material, and bring out the music already performed, rather than add more to the already polyphonic sound, achieved through electronic plugins like Decay, Reverb and EQ.

Finally, after finishing writing this piece, I needed a title which was true to this whole process. I decided to call the piece New Leaf, as this style of music was like a breath of fresh air for me and the piece was written during the turning of a new decade.
