‘tywynnu | leoma | afterglow’ is a collaborative project to commission, perform and record music by D/deaf, neurodivergent and disabled composers.

Tŷ Cerdd and Drake Music Scotland will work in partnership with Zöllner-Roche Duo (accordion and clarinet) to commission works by two Welsh composers, one Scottish, and another from north-east-England, working with The Glasshouse. The composers in Wales and England will be selected through open-call, and Scotland-based commissionee Ben Lunn will provide support and mentoring to the other artists as their new works develop.

The project is a follow-up from ‘letting the light in’, an impactful collaboration from 2023 (also funded by Beyond Borders) in which pianist Siwan Rhys performed new works by six disabled composers. All six works were recorded in Tŷ Cerdd’s studio in Wales Millennium Centre, and released on an album by NMC Records.

In ‘tywynnu | leoma | afterglow’, new compositions by the selected composers will be performed alongside recent pieces by disabled Scottish composers (Sonia Allori, Ewan McKay and Joe Stollery), and performed in autumn 2027 in:

  • Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff

  • The Glasshouse, Gateshead: Sage Two

  • Sound Festival, Aberdeen

Alongside performance, we will bring all seven pieces into the Studio at Tŷ Cerdd, working with James Clarke (Head of Recording & Production) to explore accessible ways of facilitating a process to include disabled composers' input and critique into a recording process when they are not able to be present. The recordings will be brought together on an album on Tŷ Cerdd Records.
