Tŷ Cerdd’s Eisteddfod week ended with Andrew Cusworth receiving the Composer’s Medal (Medal y Cyfansoddwr) during the last prize ceremony of the National Eisteddfod’s final evening. This was preceded by three renditions of ‘Y Ci Coch’ on the pavilion stage – three different settings of the poetry of Waldo Williams by the three shortlisted composers, Claire Victoria Roberts, Gwenno Morgan, and Andrew Cusworth – by a children’s choir assembled for the occasion. The composers also set Waldo’s words ‘Plentyn y Ddaear’ for unaccompanied SATB choir, which were the basis of the final adjudication.

Tuag Opera

Another high-profile performance was presented the previous evening in the Stiwdio tent, in partnership with Aberystwyth University, which had resulted from one of our other pathways. This was a revival of three operatic scenes from last year’s ‘Tuag Opera’, only this time, the pieces were re-orchestrated – altered from a piano version, to the richer soundworld of a mixed ensemble. Three composers took part: Lowri Mair Jones, Nathan James Dearden, and Sarah Lianne Lewis – themselves the three previous winners of the Eisteddfod’s composer prize.

The performers were led by Iwan Teifion Davies, and the singers featured were Eleri Gwilym, Dafydd Allen and John Ieuan Jones.

AffriCerdd

For our annual collaboration with the National Eisteddfod, Seraphyre (Swansea-based artist Sera Boudreaux) performed a Welsh-language set, including a song written specially for the occasion, entitled ‘Y Garreg Las’. The new song will be released on Tŷ Cerdd’s Sionci label in 2027.
