CoDI Resonance: Voice and Electronics Residential

Calling artists, sound artists and composer-performers working with voice and electronics for this short, intensive residential near the south Wales coast.

CoDI Resonance is a three-day intensive residential of workshops, listening sessions and practice sharing for artists who want to expand their work and experimentation with voice and electronics. The residential is a key part of our CoDI programme and we’re pleased to host it the week before The Oram Awards come to Wales as part of Llais Festival 2026, in collaboration with Tŷ Cerdd.

Led by artists Nik Rawlings, Marged Siôn and Tŷ Cerdd’s Freya Dooley, the cohort will explore vocal experimentation, performance and electronics using samples, DIY recording techniques and hardware/software. Practical sessions will explore performance techniques, working with lyrics, manipulating text, body movement and approaches to spatial electronics. Sessions will be shaped after participants are selected, in response to the practices of the cohort as well as those of the residency hosts.

The residential will take place in Southerndown, south Wales, close to the beach. Practical workshops will be held in and around the local area.

CoDI RESONANCE INCLUDES:

£300 fee per artist, plus a place at forthcoming public workshops .
3 nights’ accommodation (information about accommodation is below).
A follow-up session with Tŷ Cerdd (date TBC)
Travel expenses are covered for travel within Wales. Please note that travel outside of Wales will not be covered, due to funding stipulations.

Shared meals every day during the residency.

Invitation to an Oram Awards social event hosted in collaboration with Llais and Tŷ Cerdd (mid-October) which is optional to attend.

DATES: Friday 2 October (morning) to Monday 5 October (morning). Selected applicants must be available for the whole residential period.

LOCATION: Slade Cottages, Southerndown, south Wales

CAN I APPLY WITH MY COLLABORATOR?

There are 5 spaces available for individual artists.

Collaborative duos may also apply, but rooms/ spaces are very limited to accommodate this. If you apply as a pair, you must indicate this on your application and be willing to share a room (single twin beds). Each artist in the pair must apply separately.

TECHNICAL EQUIPMENT

This is a workshop-based residential for experimentation, designed to foster practice sharing, collaboration and trying new things – not a formal recording or studio environment. Where relevant and practical, participants will be expected to bring their own equipment – whatever you usually use to produce your work. We may be able to provide some small/general pieces of equipment, but this would be discussed in advance.

ELIGIBILITY

The residency is open to applications from artists and music-creators of any genre or style.

Artists are eligible who:

perform their own music/compositions

make music or sound art of any genre/style

work with voice already, or have not used their own voice in their work before but would like to start and/or build confidence with voice

currently work with/have experience with electronics (any experience level)

are open to experimentation and collaboration

would benefit from connecting with a small, supportive cohort of other artists

Please note:

Formal notation is not part of this pathway.
You may or may not already work with live processing, and/or a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation software, like Ableton or Logic).

We particularly encourage applications from artists who:

have not had formal composition/music training, or have come to music through DIY routes
have faced socio-economic and/or systemic barriers to opportunities to develop their practice or music in the past
identify as disabled and/or neurodivergent
are Black, Asian or from the global majority
identify as LGBTQIA+
are working-class.

ACCOMODATION INFO

WHO ARE WE?

The residency will be hosted by artists Marged Siôn, Nik Rawlings and Freya Dooley (Artist Development Manager, Tŷ Cerdd).

Based in South London and hailing from the Welsh capital, Marged Siôn, is a multidisciplinary artist working across voice, movement and performance. She delves deep into the realms of vocal practice, recognising its transformative power as a tool for collective liberation. Her work spans the industries of music, art, culture, and the education sector. Her projects include: Radio Ballads, Serpentine Galleries (2025) Alter, Altar, Jasleen Kaur (Turner Prize Winner 2024), Theatre Cymru (National Theatre Wales, 2023-24), We Rise: Voice and Survivorship, Serpentine Galleries (2024), Atlantic Railton, Ain Bailey (2021) and Self Esteem’s supporting vocalist and dancer (2018-present). Marged is a first-language Welsh speaker.

Nik Rawlings is a counter-tenor vocalist, composer and artist dedicated to exploring spatial works. They make work that considers experiences of networked presence, polymorphous bodies and vocal transformation. Situated between song, collective performance and dance, their practice explores the complex relational and spatial quality of voice through expansive live processing, modal chant and operatic techniques. Nik is co-organiser of Punk/t Spatial, a new DIY sound performance night at Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol. They have performed and presented work across the UK and internationally, including Bristol New Music Festival, LUMA Westbau, Sonica Festival, Glasgow's Pipe Factory, Trinity Center Bristol, IRCAM Forum, B'Sarya Alexandria and Skissernas Museum, Egypt, Arnolfini and The Cube, Bristol; with radio play on BBC 3's Late Junction, NTS and Noods.

We want to get to know you and your practice through your application and the examples of your work. Be honest and be yourself when talking about your work and interest in this opportunity. We are not looking for perfectly crafted answers, or worried about how long your CV is.

IF YOU ARE NOT SELECTED

We are working long-term to expand our programme for experimental electronic practices, and spaces are limited for this first residential. Please know that if you are not selected for this opportunity, it is not necessarily a reflection on our interest in your practice, and (with your permission) we would hope to keep in touch and find other ways to support experimental artists in different ways through our future programming.
