WNO celebrates 75th birthday

Welsh National Opera celebrates 75 years since its inaugural performance on stage at the Prince of Wales Theatre in Cardiff. Having been formed by a group of amateur singers eager for Wales to have its own national opera company, the Company put on its first staged performance, the double-bill of Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, on this day in 1946.

To mark its birthday they take a walk through history, from the Company’s origins in Llandaff to its current home in Cardiff Bay. Join the members of WNO Chorus as they re-trace WNO’s journey, culminating in this stunning performance of Easter Hymn from Cavalleria Rusticana with WNO Orchestra and soloist Camilla Roberts. The audio was recorded and produced by Tŷ Cerdd's James Clarke.
