To celebrate the eightieth birthday of composer John Metcalf, three concerts will take place across west and south Wales, offering audiences an opportunity to hear a focused programme of his chamber music performed by the Nantwen Ensemble with harpist Alis Huws.
The celebrations begin on 7 August in Fishguard before continuing on 8 August at All Saints' Church, Cellan, near Lampeter, and concluding on 9 August at St Illtud's Church, Llantwit Major. Together, the three concerts form both a birthday tribute and a musical portrait, tracing some of the recurring themes that have characterised Metcalf's music over more than five decades.
Among the featured works is Mapping Wales, one of Metcalf's best-known compositions. Written for harp and strings, the piece explores ideas of geography, memory, and cultural identity, creating a musical journey through an imagined Welsh landscape. The presence of the harp, an instrument that has occupied an important place in Metcalf's output, gives the work particular resonance within the context of an eightieth birthday celebration.
The programme also includes Castell Dolbadarn, inspired by the historic Welsh castle overlooking Llyn Padarn beneath the mountains of Eryri, and Llwybrau Cân (Paths of Song), a work whose title encapsulates one of the recurring concerns of Metcalf's music: the relationship between melody, memory, and journeying. Alongside these works, audiences will hear Songs without Words, music that demonstrates the lyrical directness and expressive clarity that have become hallmarks of his mature style.
The birthday concerts also coincide with the early stages of a forthcoming monograph, Music of John Metcalf, which will explore both his life and his music. While the book remains a longer-term project, the concerts offer an opportunity to celebrate a remarkable career and to reflect on the continuing vitality of a composer whose work remains rooted in curiosity, collaboration, and a belief in the importance of creating new music.
While facing significant health challenges in recent years, Metcalf has remained creatively active, continuing to write new music and pursue new projects. These concerts provide a fitting tribute: not a retrospective farewell, but a celebration of a creative life that continues to evolve.
